This is a beginners course in wax painting.
When I first learned about encaustic work I was intrigued and TERRIFIED!! A blow torch?! Beeswax?! The idea of it sounded outrageous and terrifying and, yet...awesome. But I couldn't get up the nerve to try if for the LONGEST time because I was just so afraid of blowing myself up. So my first and foremost objective in this class is to get you to be UNafraid of this medium because it is just as awesome as you think it is and not in the least bit scary once you understand what you need to have on hand and what you need to do it (phew!). What a lot of people don't tell you either is that it can be done on the cheap and I'm not afraid to show you some serious money saving tips to get you playing, affordably and fast, while making simply the most awesome art ever. Guest teacher will be internationally recognized, Ivy Newport!
I think the funnest part of encaustics (besides the wax and the blow torch! OMG!!!) is just demoing for you all the things that can be DONE!!! It is truly amazing. So after I hold your hold and get your studio all set up for working, we will spend some time comparing materials. There's so much to compare and a TON of ways to work with this while also saving a ton of money and I talk over all of that with you!
I will also test out a lot of different surface treatment products for you, on camera, so you can see the results without having to pay a DIME. My goal is for you to become educated enough that you can waltz into an art store and know exactly what supplies you'll want to grab off the shelves, without hesitation! So talking set up and supplies is a must.
Once we know what's going on, I do a thorough, real-time demo so you can see the potential that lies with this medium!!!
We then go through the process of making a series of very simple and yet very exciting projects!
And because we are having a good time and all, we just make some more...
And then some more...
And maybe just one more!
So when we are all bugged out we play with all sort of stuff like image transfers...
And what happens when fabric meets hot wax. Yep! You heard me!!! Let's do this!
Admit it, you're impressed!!!
But at some point we need to say, Okay, we got this, time to kick it up a notch. So then we do!! But it's not scary you guys! Why? You ask? Because, as always, I'm here for you! To hold your hand, walk you through these projects one step at a time, and answer any questions that may come up during the creative process! And, of course, no class would be complete without a face project or two so that's where we go next.
And then another to reinforce some more fun using the same techniques...
And in classic Karen style, a third, just for kicks.
